About Me

Vea abajo para español. My name is Abby Jaramillo and I am mama to a thirteen-year-old and a ten-year old here in San Francisco, California. We have been homeschooling since 2016 — my daughter completed kindergarten and my son has never been to school at all. We follow Waldorf pedagogy in a very DIY way — and lean into unschooling whenever necessary. In 2023 I received a certificate in Teacher Development from the Sacramento Waldorf School.

“Chigüiri-cosas” is a name only South Americans will recognize . . . my son’s nickname is Chigüiro, (“chee-gwee-roh”) since he as a little one was so like the furry, playful, water-loving capybara.

I have many different interests, as you’ll see, but with each passion or life experience (music, dance, urban gardening, birth, postpartum, raising bilingual children . . . ) I’ve tried to use it to bring people together, to build community, and to connect with other women and their children.

At first, I started writing here to voice my postpartum experiences and to become a resource for other moms. I have continued to reflect on my parenting experiences past the baby-stage, but for the rest of my life I will always be postpartum. So it all relates. The underlying theme for me is to try to be authentic and present with my children and to tune in to their inner lives and emotional needs. From the baby stage onwards, this has been an unexpected journey of self-development and my own intuition has been my best guide.

I’ve gained a lot from the world of Waldorf education, adapting what I learn to my family’s cultures and languages. My husband is Ecuadorian, I have lived and worked in Peru and Ecuador, and we want our children to be bilingual and connected to their multiple cultures (Jewish, too!). In 2011, a few other moms and I started a bilingual play group in our neighborhood, and there I present stories with table puppets, songs, rhymes, and some Latin percussion. I draw on my own childhood musical education, the work of Tamara Chubarovksy, and what I’ve learned from Celebrate the Rhythm of Life courses.

green3For a time I am offered this to the public through Cuento y Canto, classes in Spanish for families using stories, rhymes and songs. I added my dance background as well, to offer Cuento, Canto y Danza at Calliope Dance Studio in Noe Valley, as well as a Samba & Brazilian Dance class for children. For 10 years I learned from and performed with Bay Area Brazilian dance groups including Aquarela Brazilian Dance Ensemble and Grupo Samba Rio.

I also worked as a postpartum doula and I still love to offer support in this capacity whenever I can. My own experiences called me to work with families during the postpartum time: The emotional changes of becoming a new mother, all while managing physical recovery, physical changes, and the intense care of a new baby. A new baby’s mother, too, needs nurturing care during this time. In 2012 I completed the 15-hour training course at Natural Resources as well as a postpartum nutrition course and Infant/Child CPR certification.

Before I had children, for over 10 years I led and facilitated youth development programs in San Francisco, and I founded and directed a nonprofit providing school garden programs for middle and high school students. I love encouraging children to explore in nature, to taste food crops directly from the soil, and to prepare and eat fresh, delicious food. I hold my Masters in Nonprofit Administration from the University of San Francisco.
